Miami Georgia Tech Game Postponed Again

For Miami and Georgia Tech, the room for error is gone.

If the Hurricanes want to continue having whatever sort of viable shot at winning the Atlantic Coast Briefing's messier-by-the-week Coastal Division, they must shell Georgia Tech. And if the Yellow Jackets want to have whatever realistic adventure of making a bowl game, they must vanquish Miami.

Equally such, both sides know what'south coming from the other side when they face off Saturday — desperation.

"When nosotros play in the ACC Coastal, we look the games to be tight, shut, highly contested," Miami jitney Manny Diaz said. "Georgia Tech's backs, they're against the wall. We recognize that. We expect to see a wounded squad fighting for their life on Saturday."

He'd prefer to see his squad have the same approach. Information technology'due south been that way of late, and information technology'southward been working.

Miami (4-4, 2-ii) has given itself hope once more after beating Northward.C. State and Pitt — both AP Top 25 teams at the time, both in the opening Top 25 rankings released earlier this week past the Higher Football Playoff committee — over the by two weekends. None of the 4 teams left on the Hurricanes' schedule currently has a winning record, so there'southward a adventure for Miami to keep moving upwards in the Coastal race.

"To me, information technology's, 'Hey, let's find a mode to win a football game and keep that backs-against-the-wall mentality,'" Diaz said.

Sports

Georgia Tech (3-5, 2-iv) is ahead of only Duke in the Coastal standings. Merely a loss on Sat would put postseason hopes in accented peril since the Yellow Jackets would demand to win out but to go bowl-eligible at half-dozen-vi overall — and, in that scenario, they'd have to shell No. 1 Georgia to make that happen.

The Xanthous Jackets insist they're seeing steps in the right management.

"The thing that we've done in this program, the guys take done, the coaches take washed, is (shut) the margin for mistake," Georgia Tech motorbus Geoff Collins said. "Nosotros've decreased the gap amongst the teams that we've played. The last phase in the evolution of the program (is) non only to be in these shut games ... we've got to find means to win them."

RENEWED RIVALRY

The Hurricanes and Xanthous Jackets didn't play last season. They were scheduled to play in November, only to take the game postponed because of virus-related issues at Miami. The rescheduled date was pushed to December. 19, and the Yellow Jackets wound up telling the ACC that information technology couldn't play. The Miami-Georgia Tech counterfoil was appear the twenty-four hour period before the Hurricanes lost what became their regular-flavor finale to North Carolina.

Shut GAMES

Miami has had each of its last four games — ii wins, two losses — decided by four points or less, the beginning time in program history that in that location'due south been such a run of games being and then close. Counting a two-point win over Appalachian State earlier this flavour, the Hurricanes take played v games decided by four or fewer points. That's the nearly for any FBS squad in the country entering this week.

DYNAMIC DUO

Georgia Tech has a pair of standouts leading the criminal offense, and technically, both are still classified equally freshmen because nobody lost any eligibility last year by NCAA rule. Quarterback Jeff Sims crossed the 3,000-thousand passing marking last week, making him only the 12th role player in school history with that many. Running dorsum Jahmyr Gibbs, too last calendar week, went over the 2,000-k mark in career all-purpose yards.

DROPPING DIMES

Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke threw for 325 yards in the win over N.C. State, and so 428 last week in the win at Pitt. With those numbers, he became only the eighth Hurricane QB since 1984 with dorsum-to-back 325-yard passing games — joining Malik Rosier (2017), Brad Kaaya (2014), Stephen Morris (who did it twice in 2012), Ken Dorsey (2002), Gino Torretta (1991), Craig Erickson (1990) and Bernie Kosar (1984).

THE Series

Georgia Tech leads the all-time serial between the schools, 13-12. But Miami has won eight of the final 11, even with the Yellowish Jackets prevailing in 2018 and 2019.
